Compact fluorescent lights contain a small amount of mercury that allows the bulbs to burn efficiently. Information on disposal and clean-up of broken CFLs and mercury can be found on Energy Star's® FAQ sheet (PDF). For information on local disposal options for CFLs and other fluorescent lighting, visit the City's Household Hazardous Waste page and click on the fluorescents tab under Where to Take Other Waste.
